Manatees have a small life cycle, but they go through a lot to become a father or a mother. When the calf is about to be born, the mother lays on her back so the manatee can come out. A born calf will weigh up to 60 pounds and is 4 feet long; the calf already knows how to swim. In the beginning of his birth, the mom will give the baby milk and will protect him for about 2 or 3 years. During this time, the manatee is immature so the mom teaches the calf some tips that the manatee will have to do when he is an adult, like teaching what is the correct food to eat, how to protect the calf, and where to go when needed to migrate. The manatee then starts eating seagrass instead of the mom's milk. Then, then manatee is an adult. The mom has taught him everything the calf needs to know to become a adult, so now the manatee goes on his own course of life, but he will not forget about the mother and will meet each other where the mother lives sometimes. Manatees can live about 60 years.
