Manatees have special ways of protecting their calf and sometimes have to adapt to other areas. In the beginning, the mom has to guide the manatee to make sure that he is safe and will nurse the calf for about a year. She will teach him many things later in his life. The mom will always have a close eye on her calf to make sure that he is safe. Now what happens if there is danger? The mom will do anything to protect her calf. The mom will quickly place the calf between her and away from the danger. She may also sound a vocal alarm so the calf knows to come near her quickly. Manatees spend 8 to 5 hours a day eating. Sometimes manatees use their flippers to help them eat their food. They eat various amounts of plants. Then, when the mom and calf are together they will then move away from the area. Manatees can only live in warm waters. If a manatee is in cold water for too long, it will sadly die. In the winter, you may find manatees in Flordia waters and in the summer manatees will travel as far as North Carolina.
